Where Do Good Candidates Come From?
"So You Want to Run for Elected Office?"LCDW's handbook on making that big decision to run for office is a must-have for aspiring candidates at all levels. Good candidates don’t have to be “political insiders” – in fact, it’s probably better if they’re not! Anyone who cares about his or her community enough to serve it in some way may make a quality candidate for office. School board members, township trustees, park district commissioners, grassroots organizers – these are all people who have stepped up at the local level and who may want to consider a higher office. That’s where LCDW comes in. Our aim is to identify those people, especially women, who are interested in serving their community but who may assume they don’t have the qualifications. The fact is, your local experience may be just the qualifications needed. LCDW was established because, as women, we came together and realized that we could work together cooperatively to get the job done more effectively than any one of us alone. Our steering committee is made up of women currently or previously in elected office, and we’d like to see more women in these positions. We can help connect women with training and participation opportunities. We also have a guidebook available to help prospective candidates take that leap. If you are a Lake County woman who may be interested in running for office, please contact Nancy Shepherdson (nancyshepherdson@hotmail.com) or Lauren Beth Gash (laurenbethgash@aol.com). We’d love to work with you! |
